The Role:

The Sr. Vice President/Vice President of Medical Affairs will set and execute medical affairs strategies and is accountable for management of all medical affairs initiatives spanning both office and field-based activities in support of marketed and investigational products. 


  • Maintain and cultivate a high-functioning Medical Affairs team and ensure the organization operates in compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Direct line management of the Medical Affairs team including: Field Medical, Scientific Communications, RWE/HEOR and Medical Affairs Operations (IITs, CME and Grants).
  • Partner with Clinical Development to provide matrixed leadership for Clinical Trial Design, Statistics, and Clinical Operations supporting Medical Affairs initiatives.
  • Provide strategic input into the development plans supporting launch and commercialization.
  • Drive creation and oversee execution of the following strategic plans/initiatives:  Scientific Platforms, Publication Plans, Advisory Board/Steering Committee Plans, Investigator-Initiated Research Plan, Continuing Medical Education and Grant Plan to optimize product profile(s) and build product awareness.
  • Drive the creation of presentations and tools to support effective medical/scientific engagement (MSL slide decks, training platform materials, etc).
  • Provide Medical Affairs support of product access for patients through the planning, management and execution of studies/initiatives that focus on generation of real-world evidence in support of health outcomes, quality of life impact and other measures that are key to the value messages.
  • Provide Medical Affairs leadership to the field medical team and overall accountability for the development and management of relationships with Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs). Serve as a senior representative to KOLs, working in collaboration with Senior R&D colleagues similarly involved providing strong medical and scientific presence.
  • Provide clinical expertise in the development and review of: abstracts, posters, slides, manuscripts, educational materials, Investigator-Initiated Study protocols, Advisory Board meeting objectives, medical information letters, scientific educational grant requests and patient advocacy grant requests, disease strategy plans, and commercial brand plans.
  • Serve as a senior representative of Medical Affairs to interact with key internal stakeholders:  Marketing, Sales Training, Commercial, Business Development, Clinical Research and Development, Regulatory, and Program Leadership.
  • Provide Medical Affairs strategic input for the elaboration of the brand plan(s); ensure execution of the Medical Affairs Strategy in line with the Brand Strategy.

Basic Qualifications:

  • MD with 10+ years of experience within a corporate medical affairs function and/or 15+ years of medical leadership in the MSK field. 
  • Employees joining Flexion as of 7/12/21 are expected to be able to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 prior to their start date, unless they seek and are approved for an exemption by Flexion as a reasonable accommodation based on bona fide religious or medical grounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Drug launch experience
  • Medical specialization in rheumatology or orthopedics
  • 5+ years of people leadership experience at a senior level
  • Able to effectively educate and influence stakeholders
  • Able to engage in strategic business planning/decision-making
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organization, project management skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and problem-solving capabilities
