Position Overview
The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) seeks outstanding Infectious Disease Physicians to join the Division of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Medicine. As Mississippi’s only academic health science center, UMMC provides a unique opportunity to deliver high-acuity care, train the next generation of physicians, and contribute to groundbreaking clinical and translational research. Faculty will hold open academic rank (Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor) depending on qualifications and experience.
Leadership Opportunities
Qualified candidates will have opportunities to assume leadership roles within the Division of Infectious Diseases and the Department of Medicine. Specific potential titles and areas of responsibility include:
- Director of Infection Prevention or Medical Director of Hospital Epidemiology
- Associate Program Director for the Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program (pending expansion)
- Director of the Outpatient Antimicrobial Program (OPAT)
- Hepatitis C Program Lead
- Deputy in Antimicrobial Stewardship
These roles provide excellent opportunities for faculty interested in program building, education, quality improvement, and public health leadership.
Clinical & Academic Opportunities
Candidates will have opportunities across general ID, HIV and STD care, hospital epidemiology, infection prevention, transplant ID, stewardship, and OPAT. Unique programs include:
- The Adult Special Care Clinic (ASCC): Mississippi’s largest comprehensive HIV clinic, delivering outcomes that exceed national benchmarks for retention and viral suppression.
- Antimicrobial Stewardship: UMMC is recognized as an IDSA Antimicrobial Stewardship Center of Excellence.
- Transplant Infectious Diseases: UMMC is home to Mississippi’s only transplant programs, including one of the nation’s top-ranked liver transplant programs.
- Research: Faculty can engage in NIH-funded HIV cohorts (e.g., MACS/WIHS, CCS), pragmatic clinical research, and translational projects supported by the Mississippi Center for Clinical and Translational Research (MCCTR).
Teaching & Research
All faculty contribute to teaching residents, fellows, and medical students. Opportunities exist to take on leadership roles such as Associate Program Director for the ID Fellowship, Director of Infection Prevention, or Hepatitis C Program Lead. The Department supports clinician-investigators through bridge funding, pilot grants, and protected research time, with a focus on HIV, health disparities, cardiometabolic disease, and ID-cancer intersections.
Visa Sponsorship
UMMC welcomes international medical graduates and provides visa sponsorship, including H-1B and J-1 waivers through the Delta Regional Authority’s Delta Doctors program.
Compensation
The compensation package is highly competitive within academic medicine, with incentive plans that reward clinical productivity and support for academic and research contributions.

Requirements
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- MD/DO or equivalent
- Completion of ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine residency and Infectious Disease fellowship
- Board Certified or Board Eligible in Infectious Diseases
- Eligibility for Mississippi medical licensure
Preferred Qualifications:
- Academic rank consistent with experience
- Interest in HIV, infection prevention, transplant ID, stewardship, or hepatitis
- Demonstrated commitment to teaching, scholarship, and health equity
- Experience in clinical research or program development
