- Global Surgery Fellow
Description
Dear Candidate,
The Creighton University Department of Surgery created a Global Surgery Fellowship (GSF) in 2017. “In Creighton’s Jesuit, Catholic tradition, to improve the human condition and transform learners into exceptional physicians who are leaders in advancing medicine, health and well-being”, and following the Catholic Social Teaching of “the preferential option for the poor”. The fellowship is meant to help meet the critical surgical health care needs of low-income countries and rural communities in our country.
We are currently recruiting for academic year(AY) August 2026-July 2027(current PGY5) and AY August 2027-July 2028(current PGY4)
The fellowship is one year with the first 6 months spent in Omaha, Nebraska and the last 6 months internationally at a district hospital in a low-income country.
Currently we are partnering with University of Global Health Equity in Rwanda and have two other partnerships in the planning stages. A quality improvement project at the international site is also required to be completed by the fellow, directed by our international partners.
The fellowship provides significant obstetric, orthopedic, urologic and ENT surgical experience as the operating surgeon in Omaha. In addition, adult and pediatric anesthesia, ultrasound, and burn rotations are available. There is a week-long cadaver lab with neurosurgery, plastics and other procedures. The Omaha rotations are altered in length and inclusion based on the fellows' prior subspecialty exposure and career pathway.
The fellow is paid a PGY 6 salary and benefits including travel expenses to and from the low- income country. In addition, the required quality improvement project at the international site has a
$5000 budget.
The fellowship founder and initial director, Dr. Charles Filipi, is a retired general surgeon at Creighton University who has been involved with international humanitarian surgical, chronic care, and nutritional programs for over 20 years. Dr. Caron Gray took over as fellowship director July 1, 2023. Dr. Gray is an obstetrician-gynecologist at Creighton University who has been the director of the OBGYN portion of the GSF since its inception. She has been involved with the Creighton University Institute for Latin American Concern in the Dominican Republic since 2006 and has partnered with the Dominican NGO in building the Women’s Health Program as well as directing a women’s health elective and interprofessional summer program for medical students. Dr. Gray shares the same passion and collaborative spirit as Dr. Filipi, and he continues to be available to provide wisdom and guidance.
