They will be responsible for effectively advancing the Society’s mission, vision, and strategic plan. The CEO is accountable for strategic and operational activities and a team of approximately 90 staff, maintaining a strong organizational culture, and overseeing a budget of $37 million. They also serve as the CEO of the IDSA Foundation, the charitable arm of the Society.
The IDSA is advancing infectious diseases research, education, and care by leading nationally and globally in advocacy, communication and by publishing and presenting the highest quality research in its meetings and journals. The past century has been a relentless march of positive progress in health outcomes for humanity — with lifespans growing, survivability of devastating diseases increasing, and some of the worst diseases eradicated entirely. For more than 60 years, IDSA has been a leading force in that progress — by bringing together ID professionals to discuss the pathogenesis, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases, the attributes of microbes, specific immune reactions, and the most vexing epidemiological dilemmas.
IDSA is a large and growing Society whose 13,000-plus members represent the diversity and vibrancy of the field. IDSA members include practicing clinicians who provide direct patient care, scientists and researchers in the academic setting, public health officials, hospital epidemiologists, people working in industry, and ID specialists working in many other settings. IDSA members work across the United States and in nearly 100 other countries on six different continents around the world.
The CEO will be responsible for strategic leadership, governance, financial management, operations optimization, external relations and advocacy work on behalf of IDSA and its members. This individual will collaborate with the Board of Directors in developing a growth-oriented organizational strategic vision, as well as a multi-year plan to achieve financial stability and ongoing improvement for the IDSA enterprise. In addition to overseeing all administration, management and operations functions for the enterprise, the CEO will lead fundraising strategy and recruitment, retention and people development. The CEO will also represent IDSA and the field of infectious diseases to key audiences and stakeholders to support and enhance IDSA’s mission, impact and values in a public forum.
The ideal candidate will be a mission-oriented, business savvy, proven executive with an outstanding record of accomplishment in leading organizations of similar or larger size and complexity in the healthcare sector. The CEO will be an authentic, results-oriented partner to the members, Board of Directors, staff, and stakeholder communities, and take IDSA to its next stage of growth and impact. Experience working in close collaboration with a diverse staff and volunteer Board of Directors is optimal.
